Architecture

Among the alpine grand hotels of the Belle Époque, which stand distinctively against the famous white peaks of Piz Roseg and Piz Bernina, there is now a house made of stone that seamlessly bridges the past and the present.

Dreams and a sense of longing

Gion A. Caminada is one of the great Swiss architects leaving their own unique mark on alpine architecture. In his reduced, authentic style, he works closely alongside the building owners to create architecture with a vision. By using local materials and traditional methods in a new context, this place is deeply connected with the location and its history. Impressive heights, Bodio Nero columns and elaborate floral motifs on the ceilings of the rooms shape the atmosphere.

In the spa area, you move around a cloister-like corridor that opens to the sky, allowing rain and snow to fall on the Arzo marble-lined piazza. This is architecture that evokes an atmosphere of well-being and inspiration.

Shaping the atmosphere

Since opening its doors in 2023, the building has gradually revealed its soul. You can sense the dedication of hosts Martin and Irene Müller and their team in every word, every gesture.

Everything here is carefully curated. In the library we discover a wide selection of beautiful publications on subjects that fascinate us: design, architecture, stories about the Engadine Valley – and books about the artists whose artworks adorn the exposed concrete walls.

Sitting in the Swiss stone pine frame, we gaze out of the window of the cosy Stüvetta in our room and instantly begin to unwind. Here in this space, we feel calm, sleep peacefully and breathe easily. Maistra doesn’t shout, it quietly impresses – with quality, space and time. In every corner, we are reminded that a hotel can feel like home.
