A young host couple has fulfilled a long-held dream. Anne-Sophie and Dario have given the former Berndl bakery a new life – and with it, Mittenwald a place that has quickly become a small centre for those who appreciate good coffee, beautiful things and a certain atmosphere. A house for exactly that, with a number of thoughtfully designed apartments above.

Karls
A place to
stay a while
Resi, Franzl and Irmi are the apartments on the ground floor – three design stays that can easily be combined into one larger holiday home if needed. The rooms feel calm and effortless. Nothing too much, nothing too little.
Books, ceramics, textiles, small artworks – each object seems placed where it belongs. Somewhere between Scandinavian clarity and an Alpine sense of warmth, a retreat has taken shape. Not designed for a quick wow-moment, but for the kind of comfort that invites you to settle in and stay a while.

Karls
Life at
Karls
Mittenwald has always been a lively place. Between Lüftlmalerei, violin workshops and the steady rhythm of hikers, bikers and day visitors passing through, the village centre moves at its own alpine pace.
Right here, among the painted houses, a young host couple has fulfilled a long-held dream. Anne-Sophie and Dario have given the former Berndl bakery a new life – and, in doing so, created a place that is quickly becoming a small centre for those who appreciate good coffee, thoughtful design and a certain atmosphere.

Anne-Sophie and Dario are standing behind the counter, welcoming everyone and living their dream here. Their son Carlo is right in the middle of it all, still in his baby carrier. And of course, they always have a few good tips ready. For the perfect day in the mountains.

Karls
A day in the
mountains
Around Karls – the magnificent backdrop already suggests it – the mountains begin almost at the doorstep. Hikes into the Karwendel range, bike rides, or an easy ride on the nostalgic single-chair lift up to the huts above Kranzberg.
Returning to the village in the afternoon, there may be no better spot than the little bench in front of Karls. A sheepskin thrown over the wood, the sun warming the square, village life passing by.
Downstairs in the café, the smell of fresh cake and Wildkaffee fills the room. A place where house guests, locals and day visitors meet. At the long table people read, talk – and occasionally open a laptop. Why not work from here for a while? A small change of scenery that often brings fresh thoughts with it.

The location
Mittenwald lies about 90 minutes south of Munich just across the Austrian border – a small Alpine town that makes a perfect base for a few days in the mountains.
