Twelve rooms, reshaped with the good bits from back then and a lake that glints into the curtains. Wine lounge below, loungers by the shore. A very good mix.

Leuchtenburg has only twelve rooms – all of them beautifully reimagined by Studio Biquadra, who know how to keep the good bits from back then while giving the Tyrolean ornaments a fresh and colourful twist.

Pension Leuchtenburg
A small paradise,
indeed
Opening the door to one of these rooms feels like being handed the keys to a grown-up hideaway. The lake glints through the curtains, doing its best to lure you outside.
But not so fast. First we look for the corners that make staying in just as tempting. Down we go, under the vaulted ceiling, into the wine lounge. You claim the seat by the arched window, adjust the cushions, set the record spinning. A few steps away: shelves with exactly the bottles we like – mostly natural, all worth considering. The sauna must wait.

Lake Caldaro
South Tyrol

Because the very best part, is still ahead of us: our spot on the quiet side of Lake Caldaro. We pack a small bag and wander over, a few steps past the vines, until we arrive – properly arrive – at our private lounger by the shore. A slice of paradise.

Lake light
Here, the sauna comes with a view, and the boathouse doubles as an honesty bar. Dicke Berta rocks gently in the water, already volunteering for a small excursion. This is the charm of South Tyrol’s southern end: a bit of Italy in the air, palms and vines, good food, and that light, familiar ease.
And at the centre of it all: Kat and Jan, who care for the old lady with steady hands and a gift for good moments. Yoga here, a cold dip there, a new bottle to try – they keep the place humming in all the right ways. Leaving is the only tricky part.

The location
Pension Leuchtenburg sits above Lake Caldaro, on the quiet side. Getting here is pleasantly simple: you wind your way through vineyards, pass a few farmhouses, and suddenly the lake appears between the trees. Park the car, slow your pace, follow the short path up to the old house.
